2.  Job summary:

 

a)      To minister to the whole maritime community connected with the port

b)      To share God’s love with seafarers from all different backgrounds and nationalities

c)      To act as the Society’s local link with the Anglican Communion

d)      To act as the Society’s local representative in the context of ecumenical maritime ministry

e)      To act as the Society’s local representative in the context of multi-faith relationships

 

3.  Principal duties and responsibilities:

 

a)      To be faithful in private prayer and public worship, to administer the sacraments and take services as and where appropriate

b)      To regularly visit the ships that call into the port and care for the practical and spiritual needs of seafarers with whom contact is made

c)      To visit seafarers who are in hospital or prison

d)      To liaise with other port chaplains, both locally and worldwide to ensure ministry continuity, particularly in cases of ongoing pastoral care, and justice and welfare cases

e)      To participate in the life of the local Anglican church and diocese

f)       To build and develop good working relationships with other ecumenical maritime agencies working in the port

g)      To build and develop good working relationships with local ministers and representatives of other faiths

h)      In consultation with the PR department at central office, to build and develop good relationships with local media in order to raise the profile of the Society’s work locally

i)        To work in co-operation with the local committee, Bahrain International Seafarers Society (BISS) staff and volunteers

j)        To complete the central office monthly report form detailing all ministry activity and highlighting any developments within the port

k)      To attend MtS conferences, seminars and courses as instructed by the Ministry Department

 

 

B. Assistant Chaplain to St. Christopher’s Cathedral, Kingdom of Bahrain
(under the auspices of the Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf)

Bahrain Anglican Church Council (BACC)

1.  Terms and Conditions of Employment:
BACC conditions apply in accordance with applicable Bahraini laws and regulations

 

2.  Job summary:

 

To assist the Dean to minister to the Anglican community in Bahrain

 

3.  Principal duties and responsibilities:

 

a)      To be involved in the conduct of regular weekly services and take his turn in preaching at least at one of the weekly services at St Christopher’s Cathedral Manama and Awali Anglican Church, under the direction of the Dean

b)      To deputise for the Dean during his absences from Bahrain

c)      To further develop the current ministry in terms of location (possible new venues) and congregations including expansion of current membership and review of “special groups” such as young families with small children, teenagers and the establishment and resourcing of Bible study and prayer groups as appropriate

d)      To attend annual Synod meetings, usually held in Cyprus , and other meetings held throughout Arabia as directed by the Dean

e)      To assist with fund-raising activities

f)       To conduct baptisms, weddings and funerals in conjunction with the Dean

g)      To be a member of the BACC (and other sub-committees as required), attend the meetings and contribute to the business and decisions

h)      To assist the BACC to increase income from collections / donations and assist with the selection of outward-giving recipients

i)        To generally assist the Dean and make a significant contribution to the ministry

j)        To foster a relationship with the 50+ Christian groups using the cathedral’s facilities weekly.

k)      To assist in the running and care of the compound and its day to day life

 

C. Education / Qualifications

 

a)      Bachelor’s degree in Theology

b)      Postgraduate study or diploma (desirable)

 

D. Professional Experience

 

a)      Minimum 10 years relevant experience as a priest or assistant priest in a Christian community

b)      Proven administrative expertise; innovative; able to motivate and communicate with people from  diverse ethnic backgrounds

c)      Prior knowledge or experience of work of Mission to Seafarers is desirable but not mandatory

 

E. Specialised Knowledge

 

a)      In-depth knowledge of the Bible and preparing sermons and intercessions

b)      Excellent written and spoken English skills

c)      Familiarity with computers, Windows, MS Office and acceptable typing skills

d)      Eligible to obtain a Bahraini driving license

 

F. Review

           

This post will be reviewed after six months and on an annual basis thereafter as part of the post holder’s ministerial review
