On Tuesday 24th May, Philip and Laila Dew came to St Christopher’s to be present at the memorial service for Heather. Despite the inevitable sadness of the occasion this was designed as a thanksgiving particularly for Heather’s life, work and influence here in Bahrain. The Bahraini community was well represented and participated appropriately and meaningfully.

This process of gathering up Heather’s life continued up to the point of the Annual Dinner Dance or Summer Ball on June 9th at the Regency Hotel. Heather was instrumental in instigating the Summer Ball some 6 or 7 years ago. It has now become an annual event in the local calendar.

This year’s after dinner speaker was His Excellency Robin Lamb, the British Ambassador, who shared some well chosen diplomatic stories to entertain the diners before the dancing began. Our thanks and appreciation to him and his wife Sue for their support. His participation in the evening was particularly appropriate as he and Philip Dew had started out their life together in the Middle East many years ago at MECAS – the Middle East Centre for Arab Studies in the Lebanon. Tribute was paid to Heather and to all the hard work and inspiration she had put into the dance and similar events throughout her life both in Bahrain and elsewhere in the Middle East.

    Left:  ‘Rachel and her Team!’

Unfortunately a conflict of events had been arranged for the same night depleting our usual numbers a little. Nonetheless it came up to its usual standard both for dinner, dance and raffle draw. The consensus seemed to be at the end of the night. (or early next morning!) “a good time had been had by all!”

Our thanks and gratitude to Rachel and her team for creating such a well organised smooth running event; to ‘Nighshades’ for their entertainment; the manager and staff of the Regency Hotel for their quality food, care and attention; and to those who donated prizes for the draw.

Keep your diaries open for the St Christopher’s Ball in June 2006 and let’s keep up that great tradition so ably started by Heather
