Desire |
I began Bible study
with a heartfelt longing to read, study and know the Bible. |
|
Disinterest |
Failing to see the
connection between the Word of God and the personal issues and
challenges in my life, I involved myself in activities other than
Bible study. |
|
Distraction |
I’d become preoccupied
with these other activities, which I knew were not as important as
Bible study, but served to keep my days busy. Bible study was always
on my list of things to do, but usually appeared at the bottom of
the list.

Defeat |
Eventually, because
Bible study was not part of my daily schedule, I stopped reading or
studying the Bible altogether.
Can you
identify with this cycle?
Every time I heard a sermon on the benefits of Bible study, the
desire to go through the entire Bible would resurface in me again,
just like when I received my first Bible. I would buy a new Bible or
join a study group. Not long after, the points of the message would
fade from my memory, the new Bible would find a place on the shelf
with the rest of my Bible collection, and I would stop the study
group. I was stuck in a cycle of defeat. But I don’t want to be a
defeatist, I want to be like Jesus, the victor.
“We are more than conquerors, through Him who loved us .”
(Rom. 8: 37) |

Victory |
Then something
wonderful happened as I persistently studied the Bible. I began to
discover the One who wrote the book. I realized His writings were
love letters, written personally to me, and that the Bible was not
merely an accumulation of historical wisdom to be memorised and
quoted. God Himself met me during those times of study. It was as if
He opened a door of hidden riches.
