DHOW disaster anniversary, 30th March

On Sunday 30th March there will be a special service in St. Christopher's Cathedral at 4.00 p.m. to mark the 2nd anniversary of the Dhow disaster here in Bahrain when 58 people tragically lost their lives.  For many in Bahrain that date has receded into the past but for others it is still very much uppermost in their minds.  Life was changed.  Hopes and dreams smashed in a few agonizing moments as the dhow went down and lives were lost.  The survivors will always have that moment and its dreadful aftermath indelibly etched upon their memory.  The least we can do is remember with them and stand alongside them.  And so we shall.

The service 30th March will include a time of remembrance and the reading of the names and the dedication of a plaque in the cathedral to their memory.

The service is open to anyone who wishes to attend and contributions towards the content of the service would be very welcome by the dean in the days prior to the 30th so that they can be incorporated into the service.

Saar service

The service we held at St. Christopher's   School on Saturday 1st March was rather a disappointment, or at least the numbers attending were disappointing.  The Infant School Hall is ideal and the service format was well received.  The Saturday morning Awali congregation gave up their worship slot to support it along with members of the cathedral council and one or two others.  But the influx of new people did not happen.  Maybe 4.00 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon is the wrong time.  We shall be repeating the experiment again in a month or two at 10.00 a.m. on a Saturday in the hope that this might prove more attractive.

The idea is to respond to those who say they want to come to church but the cathedral is too far away from Saar and Budaiya and anyway, people avoid driving into Manama at the best of times!

Not so mad after all!

"Make a Difference" was our harvest theme in October 2007.  Nothing much came of our efforts to provide biodegradable re-usable shopping bags to replace plastic carrier bags so widely used in our supermarkets.

In the 6 months that has elapsed some of our major supermarkets have given notice that within the next couple of months they will be charging for plastic carrier bags and jute shopping bags are now widely available at low prices to replace them.  So it seems God was at work all the time, and I like to think it was our prayerful concern that helped to bring about this revolution.  Now we move on.  There is much to be done as we take seriously our stewardship of creation.
