Christopher's Cathedral, Bahrain

The
Feast of St. Luke the Evangelist which, this year, occurred on
18th October 2009, was both a gracious and grand affair in the
chaplaincy of Bahrain.
But
as is true with any significant event, it is not just the high
profile side of the ocassion which remains etched in the
memories of those who participated in the process. For
some, it is special because of their contribution to the event's
success. It was with great pride that a team of young
people who regularly attend the Friday morning family service at
the cathedral offered their services as ushers and
sides-persons. The eldest of the group modestly, yet
flawlessly, assumed the crucifer's role.
The community in Bahrain was significantly represented too: other church clergy; school principals, chairpersons of charities; "friends" of St. Christopher's Cathedral and of course, members of its congregations. More than one hundred and fifty people thronged to witness a unique occasion. |

The Archdeacon's Collation A vibrant start to the service preceded the formalities. Bishop Michael read the Deed of Collation dated 1st June 2009, then asked: "William, will you as Archdeacon, under my authority, faithfully shepherd the Church in the chaplaincies committed to your care and, with compassion and justice, superintend and guide their life in Christ?" The Archdeacon replied "I will, the Lord being my helper". After kneeling before the Bishop and being blessed, he rose to stand beside the Bishop.

The Dean's Installation The Cathedral Wardens led the Dean-designate to the chancel step and, standing before Bishop Michael, declared "Right Reverend Father, we present Christopher Martin Butt to be instituted as Chaplain in Bahrain and Dean of this Cathedral Church". Bishop Michael read the Preface. The Dean-designate read the Declaration of Assent and made the Oath of Canonical Obedience. Bishop Michael read the Deed of Institution after which he "required" the Archdeacon to install Christopher Martin Butt, now chaplain in Bahrain and Dean of St. Christopher's Cathedral. In simple language, the newly-styled Very Reverend Christopher Butt was conducted to his official wooden chair (stall)! An atmosphere of informal fellowship and welcome was immediate. Tricia was invited by Bishop Michael to join Chris at the chancel steps and representatives of the congregation, clergy and laity greeted them warmly.
