A photograph taken at the
dedication of a Memorial to the late Dr. David Say who
was Bishop of Rochester, England for 27 years. Many will
recognise past members of St. Christopher’s congregation -
Shrimathi de Souza
who had flown into the UK from Bermuda,
Brian and Sheila Millard
from the USA together with David Say’s daughter
Anne and
Yvonne Trueman
who kindly sent the photograph. Yvonne writes :-
David’s son William
and family had arranged for the Dedication and this took place
after Evensong on the 21st September. Friends gathered for a
service to remember a great man, and friend to everyone. The
service was conducted by the Dean Adrian Newman and contained
David’s favourite hymns and prayers. The late Archbishop of
Tonbridge described David as an “Episcopal Giant” - he was in
fact over 6fty 6ins tall. He had a wonderful sense of humour;
working for him in the earlier years when he was Rector of
Hatfield he officiated at both my marriage and that of my
sister. When my son Julian was born I asked him to be his
Godfather. David’s answer was “Well of course, yes! I already
have 14 Godsons, now I’ll have a RUGBY team!“ David’s favourite
expression was “Alleluia, On we go!” A great man, we will miss
him.
