A WAY IN THE WILDERNESS

Bishop John Brown, the third Bishop of our Diocese, is probably well-known to a lot of you. Since his retirement in 1995, he has been an Assistant Bishop in his home diocese of Lincoln and has been busy in giving pastoral support, in speaking and in lecturing. He has also found the time to write his first book and Bishop John will be launching it with his publishers at the Lambeth Conference, in a slot provided between 1400 and 1530 on Friday July 25th.

The book is called "A Way in the Wilderness: a bishop's prayer journey through the Arabian Peninsula". There is a Foreword by Bishop David Hope, formerly Archbishop of York and Chairman of J&MECA during Bishop John's years in the Province. The aim of the book is stated in the first sentence of the Introduction: "....to help Christian churchgoers to pray intelligently and with knowledge about Islam and the relationship between Christianity and Islam....." Each chapter is named after a country in the Gulf, beginning with Iraq and ending with Yemen and Saudi Arabia and, drawing on his own experiences of dialogue with Muslims, both within the diocese and in the wider arena of the Province and elsewhere, Bishop John tries to give non-Muslim readers a clearer understanding of where Muslims are coming from in their different guises: Sunni, Shia, Ibadhi, Wahhabi, moderate and radical.

The final two chapters are entitled "Human Rights and Human Responsibilities" and "Christian-Muslim Relations". The book deals with the issues that are being brought out in the western and northern hemispheres at the present time and Bishop John draws on his experience in the Arabian Peninsula to address people's concerns and anxieties concerning Islam and the relationship between Christians and Muslims.

The book is published by Christians Aware, an inter-denominational charity and publisher whose patron is the Archbishop of Canterbury, and it will be published at £6.50. The ISBN number is 978-1-873372-27-2 and anyone interested will be able to obtain copies direct from the publisher: Christians Aware, 2 Saxby Street, Leicester LE2 0ND.

From the Introduction

"Here is a book which cannot fail to encourage all who pray, often in unknowing and in anguish about situations and circumstances from which they are far distant"

Dr David Hope

"[This book] is not academic but rather offers a wonderful insight, and through that offering there is the challenge to us the readers to change, grow and act for justice and peace in the Middle East"

Barbara J Butler, Publisher, Christians Aware: Preface

About Christians Aware Christians Aware

is an international and interdenominational educational charity
working to develop multi-cultural and inter-faith understanding and friendship
locally, nationally and internationally. Its aim is to work for justice, peace and development.
The focus is on listening to encourage awareness and action.

It does this with a programme of focus groups, conferences, international exchanges,
work-camps and publications. Travel with Awareness is a book of guidance for the
international visits which are often to places where there are or have been situations
of conflict, such as Palestine, Israel and Rwanda. Groups also visit places where
there are acute development needs, including primary health care, education and
water harvesting.

The words of Ronald Wynne are important:
`Do not try to teach anyone anything until you have learnt something from them.'
